Effective Communication in Business

About the Course

The course aims to help you develop your business communication skills. You will learn how to improve your ability to work with, manage, and lead others, and to succeed in a range of internal and external communication situations that you will face at work.

Multiple delivery methods will be utilized throughout the course. These include class lectures, student presentations, experiential activities, video analyses, simulations, and group work. Using an ‘executive coaching’ model common in business today, your instructor will work with you throughout the class so that you can meet many of the challenges you may face in areas such as business presenting, interpersonal communication, and small group communication. The ultimate goal is to help you accomplish the communicative goals you establish for yourself, in your career search, and beyond in the business world.

We will focus on the knowledge, skills, and strategies necessary to help you succeed communicatively in the workplace. The primary focus of his course is on oral communication skills in four domains:

  1. Business Presentation Skills
  2. Visual and Verbal Persuasion Skills
  3. Interpersonal Communication Skills
  4. Small Group Communication Skills

Learning Focus

  1. Business Presentation Skills: Learn how to become a successful public communicator and presenter.
    Learn how to present different types of materials. Apply communication and persuasion theory and strategies as you organize informative and persuasive content and effectively deliver individual and team presentations to varied audiences. Set goals for continued presentation improvement as you move toward the end goal of becoming successful as a communicator and presenter.
  2. Visual and Verbal Persuasion Skills: Learn how to communicatively persuade in interpersonal, small and large group settings.
    Apply visual and verbal persuasion research and theory to interpersonal, small and large group communication. Learn how to analyze audiences, organize messages for maximum persuasive impact, and communicate these messages in a persuasive manner. Work with your instructor to continually refine your persuasion skills in a variety of settings. Learn how to create dynamic and persuasive presentation visuals.
  3. Interpersonal Communication Skills: Learn how to work and communicate successfully in interpersonal contexts.
    Learn about topics such as interpersonal influence, non-verbal communication, intercultural communication, interviewing, and finding similarity. Learn how to present yourself as a confident, competent communicator and professional in interpersonal contexts. Become more aware of, and knowledgeable about, why people behave as they do in organizations across cultures, and improve your diagnostic ability to solve problems in organizations.
  4. Small Group Skills: Learn how to become a communicatively competent leader and strong participant in work groups.
    Learn about small group communication in team meetings, taking up team roles, managing team conflict and team diversity. Develop an understanding of how to become both a communicatively competent leader and a strong participant in work groups.

Expectations: Attendance, active participation, and a positive attitude are required for successful completion of this course.
