Course Description

Cover Fall 2013Technical Communication 1 is a three-credit course offered to students from the School of Engineering. Over one semester, students will attend three hours of class, and will be expected to complete up to six hours of out-of-class work, per week.

The course focuses on three topic areas:

Engineers and identity: Students examine what characteristics make engineers different from other professionals and analyze the types of language that are typically used in engineering texts.

Engineers and social responsibility: Students analyze and discuss some of the major ethical issues that engineers face in their work, with reference to real-world cases. They prepare and deliver a presentation and lead a seminar discussion on an engineering ethics issue. They also submit an analytical report in which they discuss their case.

Engineers and creativity: Students discuss and evaluate engineering innovations and devise an innovative engineering idea. They give a presentation on their innovation and submit a proposal report.

The course aims to develop students’ ability to deliver presentations and take part in discussions on topics relevant to the work of a professional engineer. It also aims to enhance their ability to write about engineering-related topics, combining the use of sources with their own ideas. Language work focuses on developing the vocabulary, language structures, writing and speaking skills which will allow students to fulfill these aims.

Should you register for LANG 2030 or  LANG 2030H?

Lang 2030H is an adapted version of the LANG 2030 course for students with very high English language proficiency. LANG 2030H students follow the same basic course and use the same course book as the mainstream LANG 2030 classes. However LANG 2030H classes are adapted to include more challenging exercises and reading materials. There is less focus on language proficiency and more focus on developing academic English skills in these classes, and the pace will be faster than in the mainstream classes. LANG 2030H students are required to meet higher standards in their written assignments.

Pre-requisites for LANG 2030H

Students with credit transfer from LANG 1002 and LANG 1003 and an IELTS score of 7, with no sub-score less than 6.5, or an equivalent qualification OR an A+ grade in LANG 1003 are enrolled in LANG 2030H.

Students who meet the pre-requisites for LANG 2030H cannot swap to LANG 2030. Students who do not meet the pre-requisites cannot swap from a LANG 2030 section into a LANG 2030H section. Students who are not sure if they meet the pre-requisites for LANG 2030H should speak to the course coordinators.
