Course Description

This course provides a foundation in modern standard Arabic, and a survey of important aspects of the history and culture of the Muslim world which have an influence on contemporary life.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:

  • gain an introductory insight into Arabic language and culture;
  • develop a sense of confidence when dealing with Arabic-speaking people and Arabic-language materials in their daily lives;
  • understand, make, and respond appropriately to, everyday conversational enquiries;
  • acquire sufficiently accurate pronunciation and intonation of Arabic to be understood by native speakers of the language.
