Course Description

This course follows on from LANG 1126 (Chinese for Non-Chinese Language Background Students VII), designed for UG and RPG students of non-Chinese language background, who have already learned Chinese for seven our semesters or about 350 hours. Students who wish to take this course must satisfy the prerequisite of LANG 1126 or its equivalence.
Building on LANG1126, the course aims:

  • to further enhance students’ confidence and competence in Chinese communication through practice with particular emphasis on both oral and written communications involving very complex language structures, functions, and situations, and very advanced comprehensive listening, speaking, reading and writing skills training;
  • to help them further develop listening and speaking skills for communicating in Putonghua for social, cultural, and professional purposes through project–based learning; and
  • to further enhance their reading and writing skills through learning activities incorporated with project-related texts.

Intended Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Competency-building
Listening:
  • understand Putonghua with a variety of accents
  • understand other person’s self-introduction and grasp the key information
  • understand speeches related to familiar research topics and can ask questions on content or give comments
Speaking:
  • introduce oneself in a clear and organized manner
  • present the research background, questions, methods and findings clearly and precisely
  • use transition language and connectives accurately and naturally
Reading:
  • get the gist, locate important facts and details from a research paper
  • understand accurately narrative compositions, get the gist, locate specific details and understand the intention of the writer
Writing ability:
  • master the basics of paragraph writing
  • write a narrative description of oneself
  • compose an author’s introduction for an academic paper
  • write a research proposal
  • work with team members and collaboratively produce a research report
Leadership and teamwork
  • collaborate with team-members to finish a project
International outlook
  • form an opinion on current topic about China
  • express ideas comparing of the similarities and differences about various cultures

Attendance

Students are expected to attend classes, and attendance will be taken. There is no need for students to provide any written documentation in case of your absence. Any student who is absent for 20% of total classroom contact hours will receive a fail grade (The attendance of add/drop period also count). Being late consistently will also negatively affect the final grade.
