ELPA Written Test (Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes)

Paper 1

Reading (MC questions)

The reading paper assesses your ability to:

  • understand the development of ideas of the given texts;
  • identify the main ideas and details; and infer some of the less obvious meanings of the texts.
Paper 2

Listening (MC questions)

The listening paper assesses your ability to:

  • understand social conversations, lectures and discussions in academic situations;
  • understand the main ideas and details, and infer some of the less obvious meanings of such spoken discourse.
Paper 3

Vocabulary (MC and gap-fill questions)

The vocabulary paper assesses your ability to recognize and use words at:

  • the most frequent 3,000 words level (3K)
  • the most frequent 5,000 words level (5K)
  • the most frequent 7,000 to 8,000 words level (7-8K)
  • the most frequent 10,000 words level (10K)
  • words frequent used in academic texts (AWL)
Paper 4

Writing (1 expository essay, about 300 words)

The writing paper assesses your ability to:

  • develop a given topic adequately and coherently;
  • use grammar accurately and appropriately; and
  • use vocabulary accurately and appropriately.
